Frequently asked questions

Common questions about vehicle bills of sale. This tool builds a printable document, it is not legal advice, so confirm the title transfer requirements with your state's DMV before you rely on it.

What is a vehicle bill of sale?

A vehicle bill of sale is a written record of a sale between a seller and a buyer. It lists the vehicle, the price, the date, and both parties, and serves as proof that the transaction took place. Many states ask for one as part of registering or titling the vehicle.

Do I need a bill of sale to sell a car?

It depends on where the title is transferred. Some states require a bill of sale for registration or tax purposes, while others treat it as optional but useful proof of the sale. Check your state's DMV to confirm what it asks for.

Does a bill of sale need to be notarized?

Most states do not require notarization, but a handful do, and others recommend it. This tool adds a notary block automatically when your selected state requires one, and lets you add it by choice otherwise. Check your state's DMV if you are unsure.

What information goes on a bill of sale?

A bill of sale typically includes the seller and buyer names and addresses, the vehicle details (year, make, model, VIN or HIN), the sale price and date, and the signatures of both parties. Vehicles that are 20 model years old or newer also need an odometer reading. This builder collects each of these as you move through the steps.

Is this bill of sale valid in my state?

The document is tailored to the state you select, using that state's title-transfer language and form references where they exist. Requirements still change over time and can vary by county, so confirm the details with your state's DMV before submitting.

Does a bill of sale transfer ownership, or do I still need the title?

A bill of sale records the sale, but in most states it does not transfer ownership on its own. The signed title is what officially transfers ownership, and the bill of sale supports it. Follow your state's DMV process to complete the title transfer.

How do I sell a car as-is?

Selling a vehicle as-is means the buyer accepts it in its current condition with no warranties from the seller. The document this tool generates states that the vehicle is sold as-is, with no warranties expressed or implied. Make sure both parties understand the condition of the vehicle before signing.

Is my data private? Does anything get uploaded?

Your document is built entirely in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to us or stored on a server. Two optional lookups reach outside the page: the VIN field can query the federal NHTSA database to fill in year, make, and model, and the ZIP field can query a public postal-code service to fill in city and state. Nothing else leaves your browser.
